Amplifying Asian-American voices in music
Other.Us is a social impact organization dedicated to encouraging Asian-Americans in music to share the experiences that are unique to their communities. We facilitate the discussion and exploration of the Asian-American identity, the immigrant experience, and the history and future of Americans of Asian descent. We provide a place where creators, publishers, and appreciators connect, collaborate, and help to amplify Asian-American voices. Other.Us welcomes anyone who wants to actively support Asian-American musicians in telling their stories.
We’re starting with an online forum and local meet ups. Soon we’ll organize open mics, workshops, and music showcases. As our membership grows, we plan to be a source for the industry to find talent and content, to hold an annual conference with keynote speakers and performances, and to offer college scholarships and grants to artists.
The Other Us
The Other Us
We are a diverse group of cultures that has come to be known as “Asian-Americans.” We’re keenly aware that our existence has mostly been depicted by stereotypes: The nerd, the cooley, the emasculated male, the FOB, the model minority, the rich asians. That’s us. The Other Us is a story that we ourselves tell. It’s an aesthetic that we create and a history we won’t forget. We’re immigrants, fighters, innovators. Our parents rose above exclusion, internment, and forced migration and now we are an outsized contributor to science, medicine, business, technology, art, culture, and civil rights. We also suffer from mental health issues, addiction, poverty, and internalized racism. We’re proud of those struggles and accomplishments. That’s the Other Us and we have stories to tell.
